~ LAKELAND
RECORDS COMPILATION CD'S ~
Two Reviews
by SubCity Radio Glasgow
1)
This is a great collection of tracks by a great collection
of artists. Very varied in terms of genre and style, but with a thread of
continuity running through them. The mood of the collection is laid back, and
almost all the artists sound sophisticated without taking themselves too
seriously. Most of the tracks are quirky and different, with something setting
them apart. From acoustic to blues to funk to rap, the most surprising thing
about the collection is its range.
Lakeland Records call themselves ‘a
local global label’ and this is very evident in this compilation album, which
definitely doesn’t sound like the music of Kendal in Cumbria where the label is
based. My personal favourite track is ‘Rock Star Clone’ by Jamie
Strange, which is absolutely hilarious, beginning with the lyrics “I’ll steal
this riff from another song, I’ll make it roughly three minutes long, I’ll make
the chords go one-four-five, I’ll sing in a punk voice way up high.” It’s so
well done that it would be easy to miss the parody, and it’s a good example of
the attitude evident throughout the collection.

2)
The second compilation of Lakeland Records is another
wide-ranging collection of work by unsigned artists from around the world.
David John Duckworth, the man behind Lakeland Records, seems to be
intent to provide a label that allows new artists to promote and distribute
their work irrespective of their background or stylistic tastes; accepting demos
from all comers and singling out the best for CD and digital release. Relying on
a blend of internet and traditional promotional methods, providing it is run
correctly this label could provide great exposure for a number of relatively
unknown artists. Still in its fledging stages, is Lakeland Records perhaps
typical of the way new music is to be promoted in the coming years? A number of
releases are scheduled for the coming year. Further details can be found on The Lakeland
Records website.
As far as the tunes in this selection go, the
standard is consistently mediocre. Sadly there are few stand out tracks, but all
the artists seem to be competent players with something to offer. A couple of
songs sound as if they would benefit from a bit of polishing and more refined
(often less intrusive) production, whilst others are pleasing head nodders that
do little to grab the ear or offend. All of these artists appear to have the
potential to produce very good work but sadly this isn't it. I look forward to
following the development of this label over the coming years. 01-03-08

One of the albums high points sees David J Duckworth (whose latest album ‘The
Parables of Artistic Creativity’ from which this is taken we are duty bound to
recommend you track down) pamper us with the elegantly arranged ‘Quieter times
ahead’ which can only be described as classic Primal Scream having a fist fight
with Jah Wobble’s Invaders of the Heart, magnificent stuff. Fighting for the
mantle of coolest cut. 13-04-04

ENRAPTURED RECORDS ~
"D
J Duckworth & The
Parables Of Artistic Creativity CD"
REVIEW
POSTED - JANUARY 2003 -
David
John Duckworth follows in the long line of music
lovers and musicians, who for years enjoyed
creating their own music in home studios,
building up a mountain of material with no real
plans to do anything with it! Then, one day
they think to themselves, "I wonder if"
and a demo is born!
This is how Enraptured
came to hear some of the many works of D.J. Duckworth and was suitably impressed
enough to tag a track for the forthcoming compilation, "Bedroom Ambience
4" due out on Enraptured Records
in March
2004
David’s contribution is
called, Quieter Times Ahead and will be exclusive to
BA4!
In the meantime checkout
his self released works, such as the fore mentioned, THE PARABLES
OF ARTISTIC CREATIVITY, which I attempt to review
here!
While running a label I
have never been asked to write a review, but there’s always a first time and
with David’s enthusiasm, how could I refuse!
The album opens with
Visions of Paris, a very dreamy start, which places you in some down town
ultra cool Paris lounge bar, chilling out with a tall drink and soaking up the
atmosphere.
This track has oodles of
cool!
Defcon
Four, considerably up’s the
pace and changes style, shocking you gently but firmly from your previously
induced mellow state with it’s more rockier overtones and electro
beats!
Conceptual, brings the
album back to chill out level with a melodic mix of guitar, strings, salsa beats
and vocal sample.
Next up is Pink
Perfume, with a track that seems to draw from 70’s funk and 80’s electro and
blends them together along with some soul diva vocal
samples.
River of
Gods, has one of those Gospel
Choir samples that always seem to make you feel good mixed up with electro beats
and tubular bells and just for good measure, what sounds like some pipe
organ!
Invisible Jim, is full on
electro-rock, with an 80’s full on feel and some very cool
drums!
The
Strangeness, slips into
the world of dance tracks with this trancey number that would probably be at
home in the late 80’s and early nineties, but equally feels right in the
present!
Junction 36 –
M6 North, is a trip back
to 80’s dark, atmospheric electro!
Opaque
Emotion, enters the realm
of intelligent dance with a tune that would be good on your stereo or at a
club!
Elevate Your
Thoughts, returns to 80’s
electro with a mix of beats, strings, synths and vocal
samples.
Dreaming, closes this album and is 80’s electro funk,
flavoured with great sampled soul diva vocals and is quite, well,
dreamy!
It’s clear that
this collection of tracks are heavily influenced by the 80’s and 90’s, but to
wonderful effect!
A very enjoyable
album!!!
